A new treatment for type 2 diabetes has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The new product – Mounjaro (tirpetadiza), which is given as an injection once a week, has been shown to be more effective in controlling blood sugar levels compared to other current treatments.
Moreover, a recent study showed that this drug may also be useful as a therapy against obesity.
“Given the challenges many patients face in achieving their blood sugar goals, today’s approval of Mounjaro is an important step forward in the treatment of type 2 diabetes,” said Patrick Archdeacon of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. .
Otherwise, Mounjaro is part of a new class of medicines to treat diabetes, developed to mimic the peptide 1 glocagon PGL-1, which is released naturally by the intestines and is known to regulate blood sugar and appetite.
The first drug to target this PGL-1 mechanism, called Wegovy, was approved for type 2 diabetes in 2017.
