Last week, “Degenerate Art”, oil on canvas made in 2016 by Adrian Ghenie, set an auction record for the Romanian artist at Sotheby’s. The painting was sold on May 19 for $ 9,286,700, after being estimated at between $ 7 million and $ 10 million.
Other paintings by Ghenie, sold last week at Sotheby’s, were: “Pie Fight Study 3” – for $ 504,000, and “The Trip” (2016), which sold for $ 4.5 million.
Thursday’s auction, dedicated to the art of the 20th century, had a total revenue of 180 million dollars.
In the same session, the work “29.09.64.”, Signed Ao Wou-Ki (Zhao Wuji, 1920-2013), was awarded 35.56 million dollars.
Owned by Sir Sean Connery, Pablo Picasso’s “Buste d’homme dans un cadre” became Picasso’s second best-selling work in Asia. The price was $ 22,383,750.
“Nichols Canyon III”, a painting by British artist David Hockney, was sold for $ 12,129,063.
