A nurse at a children’s hospital has been arrested after the death of a child she is believed to have poisoned. Police raided a house hours after the tragedy at Birmingham Children’s Hospital and arrested the 27-year-old.
She was suspended after being arrested, which caused “extreme shock” in the hospital.
The woman, who works at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, was detained for allegedly administering poison with the intention of endangering her life.
A source said last night that the arrest caused “total shock” in the hospital.
West Midlands police said: “We have arrested a 27-year-old woman in connection with the death of a baby. The child died, unfortunately, on Thursday, at the hospital. The woman was arrested on Thursday evening at a property in the West Midlands area, being suspected of administering poison with the intention of endangering her life. She was released while the investigation is ongoing and the results of forensic tests are being examined. The child’s family is supported by specially trained officers. “
The source added: “It’s incredibly serious. The nurse has been suspended and this will now mean a major investigation. Undoubtedly, the hospital will also analyze previous cases in which it was involved. Cases like this are awful. “
The NHS Trust said: “Following the death of a child in our pediatric intensive care unit at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, we asked the West Midlands police to look into what happened, in accordance with our own policy. The staff member involved was suspended by the trust following the national lawsuit over the sudden and unexpected death of a child. We support the child’s family in these times of suffering and demand that privacy be respected in this process. “
Birmingham Children’s Hospital is one of the leading pediatric centers in the UK.
It cares for children and young people up to the age of 16, with 90,000 patients a year.
The entire trust has 641,000 patient visits a year and 6,000 employees.
