Elon Musk visits Brazil to discuss Amazon with Bolsonaro


Elon Musk traveled to Brazil on Friday to discuss plans to protect the Amazon rainforest with President Jair Bolsonaro, ministers said. to increase deforestation during his tenure, he notes Reuters.

Musk, the chief executive of SpaceX and Tesla, who is in talks to buy the social network Twitter, also spoke with Brazilian Communications Minister Fabio Faria in November. They then talked about using SpaceX technology to bring the Internet to rural schools and to fight illegal deforestation.

Faria confirmed Musk’s visit “to discuss Amazon’s connectivity and protection,” and Bolsonaro’s chief of staff said the president himself would attend the meeting. On Thursday, Bolsonaro spoke about a future “meeting with an internationally recognized person who comes to help us Amazon.”

Deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon has risen to its highest level in 15 years under Bolsonaro, who has lobbied for more mining and agriculture in the region, drawing criticism from world leaders and climate scientists.

This added to the growing isolation of Bolsonaro, who lost a key ally when former US President Donald Trump failed in his re-election in 2020.

Musk is attending an event at a luxury rural hotel near Sao Paulo, in the company of business leaders such as Telecom Italia CEO Pietro Labriola and Banco BTG Pactual President Andre Esteves, according to O Globo newspaper. who was the first to report on this visit.

Flight tracking sites show that Musk’s Gulfstream plane took off from Texas and landed at Catarina Executive Airport, west of Sao Paulo, on Friday morning.

Musk is set to meet with Bolsonaro, a staunch conservative who defends the Brazilian military dictatorship from 1964-1985, while the entrepreneur describes his own right-wing policy. On Wednesday, Musk said he had previously voted for Democrats but would now vote for Republicans.

Bolsonaro was late in acknowledging the victory of US President Joe Biden and has not yet spoken with the Democrat since taking office, which has strained relations between the two countries.

Adding tensions, Bolsonaro visited Moscow for a friendly meeting with President Vladimir Putin just days before Russia’s February 24 invasion of Ukraine, which the Brazilian leader refused to condemn.

Bolsonaro, who criticizes major technology companies for their efforts to combat misinformation on social media, celebrated the news that Twitter has accepted Musk’s initial offer for the company. He has also been trying to attract Tesla to Brazil for years, where the company has no retail presence.
