Finland is asking to join NATO, according to the decision adopted on May 12, 2022, in Helsinki.
The decision was announced this morning by the President and Prime Minister of Finland.
This is a historic decision, as Finland’s tradition was neutral. Finland, however, had a partnership with the Atlantic Alliance. The request to become a full member is taken in the context of Russia’s attack on Ukraine. Discussions on this subject began on Wednesday, April 20, 2022, in the Helsinki Parliament. At the same time, in the latest opinion polls, up to three-quarters of Finnish citizens voted in favor of their country’s entry into the Atlantic Alliance.
Finland has a very long land border of 1,300 kilometers with Russia. As is well known, Ukraine, like Finland, is a neutral country, and analysts unanimously agree that if Ukraine were a NATO member, Russia would not have dared to attack it.
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg (Norway) announced a few days ago that if Finland formally applies for membership, it will be accepted without reservation.
Finland is one of the countries that has maintained compulsory military service.
Finland is asking to join NATO, Sweden is likely to follow suit
Finland’s decision to join the Atlantic Alliance is likely to be followed by Sweden. Like Finland, Sweden is a neutral country. The two prime ministers have already discussed possible simultaneous NATO membership.
