The accession of a state like Finland to NATO will strengthen the security of the Baltic Sea region, Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto told EU lawmakers on Thursday (May 12th), referring to the region as NATO’s weakest flank.
“Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has altered the European and Finnish security environment,” Haavisto said in a video link to EU lawmakers. However, Finland is not facing an immediate military threat, “Reuters said.
“If Finland decides to apply, Finland’s accession would strengthen the security and stability of the Baltic Sea region and northern Europe.”
Finland is asking to join NATO, according to the decision adopted on May 12, 2022, in Helsinki.
The decision was announced this morning by the President and Prime Minister of Finland.
This is a historic decision, as Finland’s tradition was neutral. Finland, however, had a partnership with the Atlantic Alliance. The request to become a full member is taken in the context of Russia’s attack on Ukraine. Discussions on this subject began on Wednesday, April 20, 2022, in the Helsinki Parliament. At the same time, in the latest opinion polls, up to three-quarters of Finnish citizens voted in favor of their country’s entry into the Atlantic Alliance.
Finland has a very long land border of 1,300 kilometers with Russia. As it is known, Ukraine, like Finland, is a neutral country, and analysts unanimously agree that if Ukraine were a NATO member, Russia would not have dared to attack it, not even shaking the security situation on the Baltic Sea.
