Hong Kong intensifies security measures on the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre


Hong Kong deployed security forces near a major park on Saturday (June 4th), warning people not to gather to commemorate China’s bloody crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in Tiananmen Square 33 years ago. for years.

Saturday marks a time when Chinese troops opened fire to end student-led riots around the central Beijing square. China has never provided a full death toll, but human rights groups and witnesses say the number could reach thousands, according to Reuters.

Chinese authorities have banned any public commemoration of the event on the mainland, and Hong Kong authorities have also restricted protests.

In Victoria Park, Hong Kong, where people gathered for an annual vigil before the COVID-19 pandemic broke out, authorities blocked major parts of the site and warned people against illegal gatherings.

China has imposed a harsh national security law in Hong Kong in June 2020, punishing acts of subversion, terrorism and collusion with foreign forces with life imprisonment.

The city government has banned the 2020 annual vigil, citing coronavirus restrictions. Some democracy activists accuse the authorities of using those rules to suppress activism, a statement that officials reject.
