If your pandemic driver’s license or driver’s license has expired, you should know this: June 6 is the last day

In the context of the pandemic, the personal documents of the Romanians were automatically extended, regardless of whether we are talking about the identity card or the driving license. Now, they will all expire on June 6.

In an attempt not to force the Romanians to stand in line in a pandemic for the exchange of documents, during the state of alert, their expiration date was postponed. In the context in which the state of alert ended on the Romanian territory on March 8, 2022, you still have until June 6, 2022 to start the steps to replace the expired documents.

What does the law say, what should you do if your documents have expired?

The extension of the validity of identity documents and driving licenses was possible in Romania through Law 55/2020. It states that “the validity of documents issued by public institutions and authorities, as well as by private entities authorized by law, is maintained throughout the state of alert, as well as for a period of 90 days from the end of this state.” In the context in which, according to GD 171/2022, the alert status ended on March 8, 2022, the persons who have expired documents during this period can use them until June 6, 2022.

The list of documents that were covered by that legislative effort is significant and includes the ID card, ID card, floating visa, driving licenses and, in some cases, temporary driving licenses. As a reference, in the case of the temporary circulation authorization, the validity of the document is extended only if there is a compulsory motor third party liability insurance policy valid for the car registered in it, according to avocatnet.ro. The only ones that have not been extended are the regular technical inspections on the car and the passports.

In other words, those who wanted to exchange their pandemic identity documents were able to do so without any problems. The motivation of the law, as I said above, was to avoid congestion.
