Intel enters Defense: technology that could change the world in war

The company will work on new tools to improve autonomous combat vehicles.

The RACER program of Agency for Advanced Defense Research Projects has developed autonomous off-road combat vehicles that can travel as fast as manned systems. The agency has now selected Intel to develop a simulation platform for these off-road AVs. The aim of the project, known as RACER-Sim, is to create computer models that mimic the type of rough, unstructured terrain that these vehicles typically encounter. Intel Labs will work with Computer Vision Center in Barcelona and the University of Texas at Austin to create these simulation tools.

“We have brought together a team of renowned experts from Computer Vision Center and UT Austin to create a versatile and open platform to accelerate progress in off-road field robots for all types of environments and conditions,” he said. Intel Autonomous Agents Lab Director, German Ros.

A new technology

The development of AVs that can operate on secondary roads, hilly areas and other types of rough terrain has been a major challenge for the industry. Traditional lidar and camera sensors are designed for predictable settings, such as roads and highways. Field AVs need to operate in a much more challenging environment, driving on extreme terrain with rocks, debris and vegetation.

Over the next two years, Intel will work to accelerate the process of designing off-road combat AVs. In the first phase, it will create new simulation platforms and mapping tools that can mimic off-road environments. Intel in the second phase will implement the new algorithm without relying on robots, a measure designed to reduce costs and time.

The Pentagon has been working for many years on autonomous technologies for the US military, including unmanned submarines, unmanned fighter jets and more. But the cybersecurity and security risks of such systems are a real challenge for their day-to-day use.
