264 Ukrainian fighters, including 53 wounded, were evacuated from the Azovstal steelworks last night, Deputy Defense Minister Ganna Maliar said.

“On May 16, 53 seriously injured people were evacuated from Azovstal to Novoazovsk for medical treatment, and another 211 were transported to Olenivka via a humanitarian corridor,” she said in a video, stating that she would later have place “an exchange” of prisoners.

Both places where the evacuated fighters arrived are in territories controlled by Russian and pro-Russian forces.

President Volodymyr Zelensky also confirmed the evacuation, saying it was an operation carried out by the armed forces and intelligence services. Zelenski added that efforts will be made to bring home soldiers who have fallen into Russian hands.

“It’s a difficult day. But on this day, as in all others, the goal is to save our country and our people. Regarding the situation in Mariupol: thanks to the actions of the Ukrainian Army – the armed forces, the intelligence services, the negotiating teams -, the International Committee of the Red Cross and the UN, we hope that we will be able to save the lives of our boys. Among them are seriously injured people receiving medical help. I want to emphasize: Ukraine needs living Ukrainian heroes. This is our principle. I think every reasonable person understands what I’m saying, “Volodymyr Zelensky said in his midnight daily message.
