Quantum Internet is getting closer to progress in teleporting data: what an experiment researchers have done

Scientists have improved their ability to send quantum information to remote computers and have taken another step toward the network of the future. This is how the quantum internet is developing.

From Santa Barbara, California to Hefei, China, scientists are developing a new type of computer that will make today’s cars look like toys.

Leveraging the mysterious powers of quantum mechanics, technology will accomplish tasks in minutes that not even supercomputers could accomplish in thousands of years. In the fall of 2019, Google unveiled an experimental quantum computer that shows this is possible. Two years later, a Chinese lab did just that.

But quantum computing will not reach its potential without the help of another technological breakthrough. Call it “quantum internet” – a network of computers that can send quantum information between remote machines.

Quantum Internet, closer to reality

At Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, a team of physicists took a significant step toward this computer network of the future, using a technique called quantum teleportation, to send data to three physical locations. Previously, this was only possible with two.

The new experiment indicates that scientists can extend a quantum network to an increasing number of sites. “We’re building small quantum networks in the lab now,” said Ronald Hanson, the Delft physicist who oversees the team. “But the idea is to build a quantum internet in the end.”

Their research, recently revealed in a paper published in the journal Nature, demonstrates the power of a phenomenon that Albert Einstein once considered impossible. Quantum teleportation – what he called “scary remote action” – can transfer information between locations without actually moving its physical matter.

This technology could profoundly change the way data travels from one place to another. It is based on more than a century of research involving quantum mechanics, a field of physics that governs the subatomic realm and behaves differently from anything we experience in our daily lives. Quantum teleportation not only moves data between quantum computers, but it does so in a way that no one can intercept.

“This means not only that the quantum computer can solve your problem, but also that it doesn’t know what the problem is,” said Tracy Eleanor Northup, a researcher at the Institute of Experimental Physics at the University of Innsbruck, who is also exploring quantum teleportation. “It simply came to our notice then. Google knows what you’re running on its servers. “
