Svitlodarsk is located about 50 miles southwest of Severodonetsk – the center of Russian attacks in recent days.

Russia is trying to seize the two separatist provinces of Donbas, Donetsk and Lugansk, and seize Ukrainian forces in a pocket on the main eastern front.

The Ukrainian military is struggling to maintain control of a key highway to the front-line city of Severodonetsk, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry says.

Ukrainians are trying to maintain control of the Severodonetsk highway, and heavy fighting is taking place in the area, according to the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, according to the BBC.

A spokesman for the ministry, Oleksandr Motuzyanyk, said in a briefing that there are alternative routes to supply Ukrainian units in Severodonetsk, which is surrounded on three sides by Russian forces, according to epicnews.ro.

Russia’s goal is to completely encircle Ukrainian units in the city as well as in nearby Lysychansk, he added.
