Russia has started a cyber war: what is Romania’s position?

The United States and other international partners have launched a cyber attack on the KA-SAT / VIASAT satellite communications network, which took place on 24 February. It comes in the context of the Russian Federation’s aggression against Ukraine.

Romania joins this international initiative.

“The impact on the Viasat network was significant, affecting users in EU member states, including Romania. Cyber attacks on critical infrastructure are unacceptable. Romania is deeply concerned about the destructive, disruptive and destabilizing effects of these cyber attacks “, it is shown in a communiqué of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, quoted by Economica.

Romania also condemns the cyber attacks against Ukraine, which took place both before and after the outbreak of the conflict, as well as the use of malware and DDoS attacks for these purposes, according to the same statement. Our country also expresses its full solidarity with Ukraine and the Ukrainian people and condemns the unprovoked and unjustified aggression of the Russian Federation, including through the use of cyber attacks.

“Such malicious attacks are carried out with disregard for the international framework of responsible behavior of states in cyberspace, as defined at the UN level by the consensus reports of the UN Group of Governmental Experts (UNGGE) and reaffirmed by the Open Group with Extended Participation ( OEWG) ”, according to the same source.

For reference, the European Union on Tuesday accused Russian authorities of carrying out a cyber attack on a satellite network an hour before the invasion of Ukraine to prepare the ground for the assault, according to TechCrunch.

“The attack caused significant disruption to communications affecting public services, businesses and users in Ukraine, and also affected several EU Member States,” the source said.

Cyber attacks are on the rise, given the current context in Ukraine. A veritable global “army” of IT experts has rushed to Ukraine’s aid in the fight against Vladimir Putin at the call of a Kyiv minister.
