Seasons of dialogue about theater with Octavian Saiu, at the Shakespeare Festival: “The old dilemmas and new challenges of a theater director”


A special edition of the series of debates Seasons of dialogue about theater with Octavian Saiu, produced by creator / Teatrelli, will be organized this time in the context of the International Shakespeare Festival in Craiova, on May 24, starting at 18.00, in Foaierul Teatrului National “Marin Sorescu” Craiova. The guests are Vlad Dragulescu – Artistic Director of the National Theater “Marin Sorescu” Craiova, Ada Lupu Hausvater – Manager of the National Theater “Mihai Eminescu” Timisoara and Anna Maria Popa – Manager of the Theater “Andrei Muresanu” Sfântu Gehorghe, in an exceptional meeting about the old dilemmas and new challenges of a theater director. They will be joined online by Hiroshi Watanabe – Executive Producer of Saitama Arts Theater (Japan), Paweł Sztarbowski – Deputy Director of the Powszechny Theater in Warsaw (Poland) and Paolo Aniello – Member of the ERT Board of Directors Emilia Romagna Teatro Fondazione – Teatro Nazionale (Italy) ).

The dialogue, entitled “A Late Spring: The Old Dilemmas and New Challenges of a Theater Director”, takes place during the 13th edition of the Shakespeare International Festival, offline in the foyer of the Craiova National Theater and online, where it can be watched for free and live on the Teatrelli Facebook page, as well as on the Facebook pages of the Shakespearede International Festival in Craiova and the Craiova National Theater.

“Those who greet us on stage are the artists. We owe it to them, every time. But any joy offered by them is born in an ample process, in which the role can be decisive for the theater director, the one who tries to propose a coherent vision in a climate of uncertainty. What does it mean to run a theater in these weird times? How can a repertoire, a season, an event be built today? Such topics are often overlooked in a new edition of our Dialogues, said the moderator of the meetings.

Octavian Saiu, the host of the special series of meetings at Teatrelli, entitled The Seasons of Dialogue on Theater, is a professor, researcher and theater critic. He has a doctorate in theater studies and a doctorate in comparative literature. He teaches at universities in Romania, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Japan and Portugal and has twice been a Visiting Fellow at the University of London. He has given lectures and master classes at other universities in Europe, Asia and Africa, as well as at the Grotowski Institute. In 2013 he was the moderator of the “Beckett at the Festival” Conferences in the Official Program of the Edinburgh International Festival, and in 2016 and 2019 he moderated and gave lectures at the Theater Olympics (Wrocław – European Capital of Culture and Toga, Japan). Since 2004 he has been the moderator of the Conferences of the International Theater Festival in Sibiu. He is a consultant of several festivals in the world and President of the Romanian Section AICT – Theater. His articles and studies have appeared in numerous national and international publications. He is the author of 12 volumes on theater. He received the Critics Award for Theater Book in 2010 and the UNITER Award for Theater Criticism in 2013. In 2020, the President of Romania awarded him the Order of “Cultural Merit” in the rank of Knight, “a sign of appreciation for the important activity dedicated to theater criticism, for the professionalism he showed in promoting theatrical creation

Teatrelli is a project of the Center for Creation, Art and Tradition of Bucharest – created.
