Senior US officials visit Kiev and step up military aid to Ukraine


Making the first official US visit to Kyiv since the Russian invasion two months ago, Washington’s chief diplomat and defense secretary have vowed to increase additional military aid, including advanced weapons, and the return of US envoys to Ukraine.

During a visit to show Western support, Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin met with Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelenskiy and other senior officials in Kyiv on Sunday evening (April 24th) after a train ride from Kiev. Poland, according to Reuters.

U.S. officials say cabinet ministers have promised $ 713 million in new assistance to Zelensky’s government and other countries in the region fearing further Russian aggression.

US to supplement promised military aid to Ukraine in meeting over double

The meeting between the US delegation and Ukraine’s leaders lasted three hours, more than twice the time allotted, a US official said.

Prior to Blinken and Austin’s visit, Ukrainian officials compiled a list of urgently needed weapons in the United States, including anti-missile systems, anti-aircraft systems, armored vehicles and tanks, Zelenski’s aide Igor Zhovkva told NBC News on Sunday.

The high-profile US visit highlighted the changing course of the conflict as Ukrainian forces, armed with a massive influx from the West, fought well against the Russian assault on the capital Kyiv.
