For several years now, Apple has stopped making significant changes in functionality or design to the new smartphones in its portfolio. The upcoming iPhone 14, however, seems to be an exception to the rule.

The future iPhone 14 will come pre-installed with iOS 16 in the fall, and because the first details about the future version of the software have already started circulating on the Internet, we can learn some peculiarities about the new terminal in Cupertino. Basically, starting with the Apple phone in 2022, the gadget will become significantly more useful even when it is locked, with the screen closed, not only after unlocking.

iPhone 14 and iOS 16, the “revolutionary” change

If you’ve been enjoying the moment when Apple introduced a permanently turned on screen on the Apple Watch, you’ll definitely appreciate the introduction of similar functionality on the iPhone 14. According to rumors that started circulating on the Internet a few days before WWDC 2022 (Worldwide Developers Conference), there is a good chance that this detail will materialize this year. Basically, with a screen called “Always-On”, you will always see on the OLED panel some relevant information, such as some notifications, the exact time, date and possibly the battery and signal quality.

The rumor detailed above came online thanks to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg who quotes sources close to the subject. Unfortunately, if you wanted that information on the closed screen of the iPhone 13, which in theory would support it because it also uses an OLED panel, it seems that will not be the case. Instead, the particularity in question will be one of the arguments for upgrading to iPhone 14 Pro.

As a background detail, a few lines of useful information on a black screen have been found on Android smartphones for many years. At least from this point of view, Apple is only aligning with an industry trend following the competition. Apparently, there were similar speculations around the launch of the iPhone 13 last year, but the Cupertino giant’s officials changed their minds at the last second. Most likely, they realized that the impact on the battery would be too great. It remains to be seen whether Apple engineers will reveal these features next week at WWDC or in the fall, with the launch of the iPhone 14.
