Dutch government officials say the Netherlands has seen the largest increase in military spending since the end of the Cold War, according to Sky News.

Defense Minister Kajsa Ollongren said on Wednesday that “world threats and war in Ukraine show that peace and security cannot be taken for granted.”

As a result, the Dutch authorities decided to increase military spending sharply.

The amount of five billion euros per year will be allocated over the already established budget. The money will be used to buy equipment, six new F-35 fighter jets and four MQ-9 Reaper drones, according to epicnews.ro.

Thus, in 2024 and 2025, the Netherlands will reach the threshold of 2% of GDP requested by NATO to its members for military spending.

The Netherlands is considering whether to supply more heavy weapons to Ukraine, the Dutch prime minister was quoted as saying by Reuters, according to blacknews.ro.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said on Wednesday that the Netherlands was assessing whether it could join, among others, Germany, Belgium and the United Kingdom to supply more heavy weapons to Ukraine.
