Turkey is rebranding. The country is now called “Türkiye” according to the United Nations (UN), which agreed to recognize the change on Wednesday, following a request from the Turkish government. The rebranding campaign as Türkiye began in December, writes CNN.

“The process that we started under the leadership of our President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to increase the value of our country’s brand is about to be completed,” Cavusoglu wrote on Twitter on Tuesday.

In a letter to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Cavusoglu wrote: “I would like to inform you that Turkey is becoming ‘Türkiye’. The Government of the Republic of Turkey will henceforth use “Türkiye” to replace words such as “Turkey”, “Turkei” and “Turkey”, which have been used in the past to refer to “Turkish Republic”.

UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric told CNN on Thursday that the UN had accepted the change, and it came into force as soon as it received the request and made sure the document was legitimate.

“It’s not a problem, it’s not our job to accept it or not. Countries are free to choose how they want to be called. It doesn’t happen every day, but it’s not uncommon for countries to change their names. One that comes to mind is Côte d’Ivoire, which was called Côte d’Ivoire in English and they asked to be called Côte d’Ivoire “, added the spokesperson.

Cavusoglu told the state-run Anadolu news agency on Wednesday that in collaboration with Turkey’s communications department, which is affiliated with the president’s office, the government had succeeded in laying the groundwork for the rebranding. “We have made it possible for the UN and other international organizations, as well as the countries, to see this change,” he said.
