The Ukrainian military is struggling to maintain control of a key highway to the front-line city of Severodonetsk, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry says.
Ukrainians are trying to maintain control of the Severodonetsk highway, and heavy fighting is taking place in the area, according to the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, according to the BBC.
A spokesman for the ministry, Oleksandr Motuzyanyk, said in a briefing that there are alternative routes to supply Ukrainian units in Severodonetsk, which is surrounded on three sides by Russian forces, according to epicnews.ro.
Russia’s goal is to completely encircle Ukrainian units in the city as well as in nearby Lysychansk, he added.
At the same time, fighting is underway for control of the city of Leman, a key point in eastern Ukraine, the leader of pro-Russian separatists in Donetsk, Denis Pushilin, told AFP on Tuesday.
“The active phase of the liberation of Krasny Leman (formerly Leman) is underway. Russian units and the People’s Militia (separatist army) have entered the city, “Pushilin said during a pro-Kremlin show on Youtube.
He said about half of the town is already under Russian control.
So far, the Russian army has not made any statements and AFP has not been able to verify these statements from an independent source, according to agerpres.ro.
The fighting in Liman, a city in eastern Ukraine, is important because the town is an important railway junction.
Leman is a major railway junction northeast of the iconic city of Sloviansk, taken over by pro-Russian separatists by Kyiv in 2014, and Kramatorsk, the capital of the Ukrainian-controlled Donetsk region (east).
Further south in the Donetsk region, Ukrainian authorities also announced on Tuesday that they had lost control of Svitlodarsk.
