UN: Russia boycotts major EU meeting

Russia will boycott a meeting of the UN Security Council with the European Union’s Political and Security Committee (PSC) today, a rare event that illustrates a further deterioration in relations with Moscow, AFP reports.

According to a Russian diplomatic source who spoke on condition of anonymity, Moscow’s decision is linked to the situation in Ukraine.

A Western diplomat told AFP that he did not remember Russia boycotting any Security Council meeting after invading Ukraine on February 24th.

This annual informal meeting between the Security Council and the COPS has not taken place since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, writes Agerpres.

Wednesday’s meeting will discuss the European Union’s interaction with the UN in countries where the two organizations operate, such as Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Central African Republic and Mali.

The PSC is made up of Member States’ ambassadors and is responsible for the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) and Common Security and Defense Policy (CSDP).
