VIDEO: Dalai Lama gives first sermon after pandemic in India

Thousands of Buddhist monks and believers gathered on Wednesday, June 1, in the northern Indian city of Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh, to witness the teachings of the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama.

The ceremony, which took place at the Tsuglagkhang Buddhist Temple in the city, took place after a two-year hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“It’s the first time after COVID that I’ve seen such a large community come together and that makes me happy,” said devout Monika, a foreign visitor.

A large number of young students also took part in the lessons.

The 83-year-old Nobel laureate advised students to develop their inner spirituality by practicing compassion instead of pursuing material happiness, a student said.

The Dalai Lama received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989. After a rebellion against Chinese rule in 1959, the spiritual leader went into exile in India and has since lived mainly in Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh.

Supporters of the brown-robed monk lead a government in exile in India and promote Tibet’s autonomy through peaceful means.
