VIDEO: Putin is willing to ease grain exports from Ukraine

Senegalese President Macky Sall has said that Russian President Vladimir Putin has told him that he is ready to allow the export of Ukrainian grain to alleviate the global food crisis that is particularly affecting Africa.

“President Putin has expressed his readiness to facilitate the export of Ukrainian grain,” Sall wrote on Twitter after meeting with Putin as president of the African Union.

Russia was also prepared to export its own wheat and fertilizer, Sall said after talks at Russia’s Black Sea resort of Sochi on the 100th day of Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

Sall did not say whether Putin attached any condition to his offer. Russia has previously said it is ready to allow food carriers to leave Ukraine in exchange for lifting Western sanctions against it, a proposal which Ukraine has described as “blackmail”.

Putin told Sall that Russia would “continue to develop relations with Africa”, adding that the continent had “huge potential”.

Africa is heavily dependent on grain deliveries from Russia and Ukraine, which have been severely disrupted by the war.
