Thus, between June 1-5, the replica of Lego Ideas Starry Night will join the national and international works exhibited in the Dacia-Romania Palace.
The three-dimensional set depicts in Lego form the well-known painting created by Vincent van Gogh in 1889, with an emphasis on brush strokes and color options. Inspired by the landscape seen from his window in the asylum of Saint-Paul Monastery in Saint-Rémy, France, where the artist spent 12 months, “Starry Night” is one of the most famous post-impressionist works, often exhibited in MoMA, since 1935.
Art lovers can change the color palette with Lego bricks and recreate one of the most recognizable works of art in the world. From the twinkling stars and the charming moon to the village of Provence, van Gogh’s painting was brought to life in Lego form, capturing the iconic brushstrokes.
To honor the artist, the set also includes a van Gogh minifigure, with a brush, palette, easel and a tiny painting, which can be attached to give the impression that he is painting the scene. The complex set can also be displayed on the wall, thanks to an accessory that can allow it to be hung.
“It was a good mental training to invent tricks and techniques that can render the original painting. Trace brushes have many directions, in the moon and in the wavy clouds, so a creative method involving clips and supports was needed, ”said Truman Cheng, a doctoral student and Lego fan. While developing the original concept, he realized that when the pieces were superimposed randomly, they looked like van Gogh’s iconic signature.
Once Truman’s idea received 10,000 votes from the Lego fan community, it was considered for development by the Lego Group. “What makes Starry Night irresistible are the vibrant colors and brushstrokes that tell the story of humanity’s never-ending dream for better things. Truman’s design is a work of art – it shows us how many different Lego elements and techniques can be used to render the iconic painting. At Lego Group, we want to inspire the world to be creative, so we are extremely proud to have made this set a reality in collaboration with a recognized institution like MoMA, while allowing fans to become as creative as possible with bricks, create and to exhibit their own works of art, ”said Federico Begher, Head of Global Marketing, discussing the decision to turn the idea into reality.
“At MoMA, we welcome the opportunity to connect art and audiences, and we look forward to taking part in this new experience through which van Gogh’s work can be discovered, and which inspires people of all ages to become more creative,” said Sarah Suzuki. , Associate Director, Museum of Modern Art.
The set will be available on May 25 exclusively for the Lego VIPs community (www.lego.com/VIP) and for MoMa members (https://membership.moma.org/). Starting June 1, 2022, the set will be available globally, at the recommended price of 849.99 lei, on www.Lego.com/starry-night, in Lego stores and in the MoMa design store in New York or online on the store. moma.org.
