Who will meet Simona Halep in the first round at Roland Garros after the withdrawal of Croatian Ana Konjuh


Romanian tennis player Simona Halep, number 19 seed, will meet German Nastasja Schunk in the first round of the Grand Slam tournament at Roland Garros, after Croatian Ana Konjuh withdrew from the competition.

Simona Halep (30 years old, 19 WTA), champion at Roland Garros in 2018 and finalist in 2014 and 2017, will face for the first time Schunk (18 years old, 167 WTA), entered the main table as a “lucky loser”.

On Sunday, the first day of the competition, two Romanian women will perform, Sorana Cîrstea and Gabriela Ruse.

Sorana Cîrstea (32 years old, 27 WTA), number 26 seed, will play against the German Tatjana Maria (34 years old, 107 WTA), in front of which she won twice in the same number of matches: 6-4, 7-6 (5) in 2013 in the first round in Charleston and 5-7, 7-6 (3), 6-2 in 2019 in the first round in Limoges.

Gabriela Ruse (24 years old, 52 WTA) will have a difficult match, against the Belgian Elise Mertens (26 years old, 33 WTA), number 31 seed.

Simona Halep goes to Roland Garros, along with six other Romanian women present on the singles chart

Seven Romanians participate in the Paris tournament on the singles table, the others being Irina Begu, Ana Bogdan, Irina Bara and Mihaela Buzărnescu, according to agerpres.ro.

Irina Begu (31 years old, 62 WTA) will also have a complicated match with the awkward Italian player Jasmine Paolini (26 years old, 57 WTA). Begu is 2-1 in direct matches, after victories in 2019, 7-6 (7), 6-2, in quarterfinals in Szekesfehervar (Hungary), and 2022, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 in eighth in Melbourne Summer Set 2. Paolini won in 2019, in the eighth round in Palermo, with 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (4).

The hardest match will be played by Ana Bogdan (29 years old, 91 WTA), against the Belarusian Victoria Azarenka (32 years old, 15 WTA).

Irina Bara (27 years old, 114 WTA), coming from qualifications, will face the Kazakh Iulia Putinţeva (27 years old, 37 WTA).

Mihaela Buzărnescu managed to get on the main board as a ‘lucky loser’, after losing, on Friday, in the last round of qualifications. Buzărnescu will face in the first round the American Madison Brengle (32 years old, 58 WTA). Brengle won their only straight game in the 2018 Midland semifinals, 6-4, 6-1.
